The 2 Most Crucial Skills for Online Success

I haven’t posted in a while… sorry. This post should be good, or at least give you some really helpful information if you’ll take my advice- this aren’t quick-fix, overnight techniques. I wanted to write about the two most crucial skills for online success. They are:

  • Copywriting
  • The ability to maintain constant positive self-talk

The second one might sound weird, and if you’re just getting into this whole “online business thing”, than you probably haven’t heard copywriting even mentioned in all the WSOs and products you’ve been buying. The reason is, these two things are referred to as “soft content” as far as their marketability, so you won’t see a bunch of hot-selling products on these two topics- at least not in big Clickbank launches or in the Warrior Forum.

I’ve made a few posts about the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, and without going back to make sure, I might have said that it’s my #1 favorite book. If I did, I lied… It’s my #2 favorite book. The only book that I’ve read more than it is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. I’m starting to talk about mindset even though I listed copywriting first… but it’s okay, we’ll go with this for now. I have “Think and Grow Rich” in paperback, hardback, on my kindle, and in audiobook format. Almost every sentence is incredibly profound and heavy in meaning. My favorite chapters are “Desire”, and “How To Outwit The 6 Ghosts of Fear”. If you’ll go through the full exercise he guides you through in the last few pages, while it might take a full day or several hours, it will be one of the most transformative things you can do for yourself. The whole premise of the book is basically that if you will just develop a real inner belief (not hope) that you will accomplish your “major definite purpose”, that you’ll accomplish it. Anways, get the book and read from it several times a week, or put it on your ipod.

Okay, now on to copywriting. Copywriting is the art of selling/persuading through the written word/media. I’m not saying that you should buy every copywriting course out there and try to become an expert copywriter. I’m saying that you should read a few books on it, and understand the main concepts because when you understand copywriting, ever article, video, podcast, tweet, Facebook update, etc that you produce will be more effective. Understand effective copy is really what makes the difference between even a simple amazon affiliate site making money or not. The most common thing that people start out with online is building niche sites, but that’s the same as 100,000 people that don’t know how to cook all trying to make an apple pie from scratch- most of them are going to suck the first few times around.

If you’ve gone through my other posts and videos on here, then you know that I talk about how online marketing is really only three things: Great content, driving traffic, and conversion. Well guess what, copywriting is what will make all three of those activities successful or not. Great content is pretty much interchangeable with “great copy”, great copy/content will drive traffic, and great copy/content will convert.

There you go- I think I pretty much proved that I’m right. Pick up a copywriting book and “Think and Grow Rich”.

Hi Nate – good advice stated plainly and coherently. Someone on BTF forum pointed to perrymarshall.com and a “readibility tool” that he offered. I think the amazing thing to me was that it it best to have your copy read at a grade from 4 to 6 and write it at a gut level. It’s a fascinating subject. Every now and then I use it and flinch!

By the way I like your Resources to Use at top of page. I could never figure out why everyone was supposed to get a list; it’s such a simple thing that no one ever explained why.

Thanks again for explaining the tools and other stuff that most other blogs and forums think we already know.

    Regards, Mary Chicoine

Mary- I’ve heard that same thing in several places and it seems like it would be easier to write at that level but it’s not.

And you’re right- a lot of the trainings I bought when I was new neglected some key things that I guess they assumed beginners already knew- by the way, list building is something you should be doing no matter how small your site is.

    Nate,

Great information. Like you say throughout the post, learning is a continuous process. I would have to agree with you on those two superb chapters you listed (“Desire” and “How to Outwit The 6 Ghosts of Fear”).

Thanks Jay- The chapter on the ghosts of fear is cutting- it describes in detail your exact weaknesses to you like a fortune teller, or a mind reader… but it’s really helpful.

Hi Nate, great blog. I got your free ebook course (last 6 things) and also your video guide from the WSO area on the Warrior Forum.

All awesome advice and this post too has helped me a lot especially with regards to what you say about copywriting.

I have followed your advice fairly closely, and yet I think I need to convert better. I have good traffic having used the techniques you mentioned.

If you could sum up the single best way to improve clickbank conversion rates, what would you say in 3 lines?

      Jeff,

Clickbank sales will be made through auto responder messages. So that means you need to set up a freebie, and put together a good email sequence that will deliver value and presell the product you’re promoting.

Yes, that’s a good point. If you want to make a good online income it’s not enough merely to have lots of interesting and original information and insights on your blog or website. It also has to be persuasive, with calls to action.

I can certainly see the value of copywriting. However, I am a bit wary of the whole concept all the same. Basically, I worry that if I get right into it I’ll lose my unique “voice” and not be able to get it back!

What do you recommend as far as the best resources for learning copywriting, Nate?

There’s the whole archive of the Gary Halbert letters that are free online, there’s Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins, Influence by Cialdini, The Copywriter’s Handbook by Bly…

Some of the best things you can do study successful sales pages. Pretty much any sales page from Double Your Dating will teach you a lot.
