Tips From 7 Habits: Figure It Out

I’m currently reading the chapter on being proactive, and in the pages I read this morning Covey was explaining the differences in mindset of people that are proactive and people that are reactive. The main point that I highlighted today said:

Many people wait for something to happen or someone to take care of them. But people who end up with the good jobs are the proactive ones who are solutions to problems, not problems themselves, who seize the initiative to do whatever is necessary, consistent with correct principles, to get the job done.

To translate, this embodies my favorite thing to tell people- “Figure it out“.

There are rarely instruction manuals for things that we need or want to do that give an exact, step-by-step plan that accounts for any unforeseen obstacles… to accomplish most things there will come a point where you just have to “figure it out”, and that is the point where most people stop.

No matter what your goals are, the main thing you need to do along the way is just ‘figure out’ how to accomplish them; most people spend all their time trying to find someone or something that will show them exactly how- and most of the time that doesn’t exist. Just figure it out.

Limited Offer: Name: When I was just starting to figure things out, I did an interview where I walked through exactly what was working for me.

You can get this entire interview completely free, and you'll learn a lot from it.

Great post. I like to think from the perspective that if I hate where I am, I will not stop searching and learning until I’ve found a way out of the place I don’t want to be.
